Nokia smartphones coming in 2017, Company confirms

  • Next year we shall once again see Nokia smartphones in the wild. The not so surprising news comes from the Finnish company itself, through a slide featured in its investor-focused presentation at the Capital Markets Day event.
  • That is, at least as a brand. Nokia the company isn't really going to produce any of the future Nokia-branded devices, it will just act as the owner of the brand and patents, and it will oversee the creation of the new phones.
  • Actually, making those will be HMD, a new entity created earlier this year, which will pair Nokia's brand, patents, and oversight, with Foxconn's R&D and manufacturing prowess.
  • According to past information, Nokia's first new Android smartphones should be released in the second quarter of next year.
  • That means they could very well be unveiled at MWC in February, during Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri's keynote address.

Magisk ready for Multi-ROM setups, updated to V9

  • Magisk probably came to the public’s view when it gave people who were playing Pokemon GO an alternative to going stock from a rooted device.
  • Niantic had started strict implementation of its “no root” policy, and Magisk was just the tool to get you root access when you need it, but go back to stock when playing Pokemon GO.
  • Now the tool has been updated as it preps for multi-ROM support.
  • Magisk will let users gain root access to a phone or tablet, and then also give them the ability to unmount those changes – basically “unroot” on the fly – when the user needs to do something that requires stock settings like doing an OTA update, using Android Pay, or yes, play Pokemon GO, as all of these require an unmodified /system partition.

  • The version 9 update to Magisk brings a new system called “xsetprop” as a new way of bypassing Google’s SafetyNet API.
  • The V9 update also improves the Magisk Hide feature, which is another way to bypass SafetyNet on your device.
  • As a caveat, Magisk developer “topjohnwu” says that the phh superuser – the root manager app that works nicely with Magisk – must be updated to version r266-2 or better so that it works with Magisk V9.
  • In case you are using something older, it is recommended that you update phh superuser first before updating Magisk.

How To Convert and Save an Email From Gmail as a PDF File

  • You don’t need to save the entire email manually if the sender attached a document with the message. But, if the email contains some important data or information that you want to save or read offline, you can easily save the email content as a PDF file (not entire web page).
  • On the desktop, there are two ways you can access Gmail messages without the internet. First, Install and use the Gmail offline extension on chrome and second, use an email client software on your computer. If you don’t have both things, you can even save the email as a PDF file with just a web browser.
  • Follow the steps below to save an email message from Gmail as a PDF file:

  1.  Login to Gmail using chrome web browser.
  2. Open an email that you want to convert and save.
  3. Click on the ‘Print all’ icon situated at the top-left corner of the email.
  1. Change print destination and select ‘Save as PDF’.

  1. Click ‘Save’ and name your document.
  • Gmail Mobile app users can also print and save an email as a PDF in their smartphone. Go to Gmail app > open a message > click on the option menu > select ‘Print all’ > Change printer > Save as PDF.
  • If you use other email services like Yahoo, Outlook or AOL, you can also convert email messages to PDF files. Simply find a print button or icon nearby email, and save as PDF file just like above steps.
  • Windows 10 users can even use print to PDF feature from any application or web browser because the new Windows support PDF printer functionality by default. If you can’t find ‘Microsoft print to PDF’ option in the printers list, go to settings > devices > Printer & scanners and make sure there is a Microsoft print to PDF option is available.
  • Google mail is the most popular email service in the world that’s why I write this article specially for Gmail users.

HOW TO PROPERLY ROOT AND INSTALL CUSTOM RECOVERY TWRP ON YOUR PIXEL

  • Last night, the devs behind TWRP (specifically, Dees troy) finally released an alpha version of the custom recovery for the Pixel devices.
  • Now we can finally start to get ROMs for our precious made by Google phones. The only issue is that, with the new and complex nature of Android file system, there is a specific way to go about installing TWRP and maintaining root.
  • The following steps will be instructed as if you already know how to navigate ADB, fastboot, and command line/terminal at least enough to root.
  • The first thing you’ll want to do is reflash the stock boot image if you have already rooted your device. To do so, run this code:
fastboot flash boot_a /path/to/boot.img
fastboot flash boot_b /path/to/boot.img
  • If you choose not to do this, be aware that you are risking a device stuck in bootloops or causing your device to only boot into recovery or Android.
  • Next, you’ll want to have all the files downloaded from Dees Troy’s Google+post, which include both the TWRP img and the supersu.zip files. From there:
fastboot boot /path/to/twrp.img
TWRP install twrp.zip
reboot into recovery
TWRP install supersu.zip
  • From there, you will have custom recovery TWRP installed on your device along with full root. A couple of other things to note are
  1. ‘suhide’, which is an app used to make other apps not notice a rooted device, does not work on Pixels and
  2. the ‘full unroot’ option within the superuser app will not remove TWRP from your device.
  • If you follow the steps I’ve outlined above then you’ll have a fully functioning Pixel that you can flash custom ROMs, kernels, etc.
  • Without having to worry about bootloops of cause for any other concern. Let us know any cool root mods that you find.

How to Install CM 14.1 Nightly Nougat ROM on Nexus 6P

Based on Android 7.1 Nougat, team CyanogenMod has now released the official CM14 Nightly builds for Nexus 6P. You can now flash CM14.1 Android Nougat custom ROM for Nexus 6P following the steps here.

Before you update Nexus 6P to Android Nougat CM14.1 ROM

·         Create a backup of your data for when you run into some problem during the process.
·         Make sure that your Nexus 6P has at least 80% of battery life.
·         Your device should be rooted.
·         You will need a recovery tool like TWRP (preferred) or CWM.
·         Nexus 6P bootloader should be unlocked.
·         Make sure to enable USB Debugging on your Nexus 6P.

Do note that this is a Nightly build. You might experience some features not working properly. Before proceeding, please visit the official thread for more details and bug reports.

Steps to flash CM14 custom ROM for Nexus 6P

Required files: download CM14.1 Android Nougat custom ROM for Nexus 6P on your PC. Also, download Google Apps for your device.

Step 1:
Connect your Nexus 6P to your PC using USB cable and copy the downloaded files to the internal storage of your device. Power off your device and unplug from the computer.
Step 2:
Boot your Nexus to Recovery mode: press and hold PowerVolume Up and Volume Down buttons. Release them when you see the Bootloader or Fastboot menu. Use volume keys to navigate and Power button to select a choice. Select Bootloader > Recovery.

Step 5:
Follow the above step for installing GApps. After you are done, select reboot system now to reboot your Nexus 6P. It will take some time to load all files as this is the first boot after flashing, so don’t be worried if it takes longer than usual.

Allo Update Brings Sticker and Emoji Suggestions, Themes

  • Google is spicing up conversations in Allo today through a new update. We’re talking about the perfect emoji or sticker, joining the Fantastic Beasts hype, and customizing your chats with themes.
  • Now, in Allo, as you type out sentences or have conversations with someone, Google will recognize the content and suggest the “perfect” emoji or sticker.
  • For example, you could see burger or pizza emoji or relevant silly stickers of food if you are talking about dinner.
  • The suggestions, which show through a Smart Smiley button, change based on the words you type and the “sentiment of your message.”
  • For themes, Google is giving you the option to add a background to your chats.
  • That could mean anything from watermelon-esque styles to straight up black, to help with your eyes and battery.
  • With Fantastic Beasts hitting theaters this week, Google is now pushing out their related sticker pack in Allo.
  • The new update will begin rolling out today.

Microsoft has officially joined the Linux Foundation

  • Big news, Microsoft has announced that it is joining the Linux Foundation as a Platinum member.
  • This comes as a surprise as former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had called Linux a ‘cancer’ 15 years ago.
  • Things have changed. Microsoft has slowly started adopting open source, making it one of the top organisation with the most open source contributors on Github. Over the past few years, Microsoft has built Canonical’s Ubuntu distribution into Windows 10, brought SQL Server to Linux, made the core parts of its .NET platform open-sourced and partnered with Red Hat, SUSE and others. That says a lot.
  • “This may come as a surprise to you, but they were not big fans,” Linux Foundation Executive Director, Jim Zemlin told TechCrunch.
  • “There will be some skepticism, but that will be from a smaller group. There is an anti-establishment sentiment in open source.
  • Whenever a major corporation goes open source, that’s what happens. But Microsoft has been walking this talk for a very long time now.”
  • Microsoft recently announced that it will be bringing Visual Studio for Mac.
  • Built on top of Xamarin Studio that the company acquired earlier this year, the company had said, “At its heart, Visual Studio for Mac is a macOS counterpart of the Windows version of Visual Studio.”
  • The IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is designed to feel familiar to a macOS user, while still offering the cross-platform and cloud-based development capabilities of its Windows counterpart.
  • Windows and Mac developers will be able to share and contribute to the same projects with the new software.

Smartphones officially getting the Pixel Launcher

  • It seems that Google is getting a little generous with the Pixel Launcher – the launcher that came out with the new Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones.
  • The company has apparently made the launcher available to a few more devices, and this time officially, because one can always sideload the APK file at the users own risk.
  • Apparently, a number of devices running CyanogenMod 13 and CyanogenMod 14 software can access the app via the Play Store.
  • Users have confirmed – and these are users running CM13 and CM14 on their devices – that they have been able to see, access, and download the Pixel Launcher from the Google Play Store.
  • This would somehow show that devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop up to 6.0 Marshmallow are allowed to run the Pixel Launcher app.
  • But there’s a snag.
  • Once you try with other devices running vanilla Android 6.0 or better (that is, not running CyanogenMod software), the Pixel Launcher app is not available. It could be that Google is stopping Nexus-branded devices like the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X – both of which started with Android 6.0 out of the box – from having the Pixel Launcher.
  • So as of time of writing, we can confirm that only users running CM13, CM14 devices can have official access to the Pixel Launcher app viathe Play Store.
  • For everyone else, you can always download the APK installer via APKMirror and sideload at your own risk.

Quick Charge 4.0 to support 28W

  • Many manufacturers are still in a dilemma whether to invest in better batteries for their new and upcoming smartphones because the technology for batteries with bigger capacities while retaining small sizes is just not there yet.
  • So the alternative seems to be to make the charging process faster.
  • Qualcomm has been at the forefront of that segment with its proprietary Quick Charge standard.
  • Latest info says that the new Quick Charge 4.0 – which could debut with the early 2017 flagships – could pump as much as 28W of power to your phone while charging.
  • For comparison, Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 only went up to 18W. Parallel to that, Huawei’s Super Charge standard went up as high as 22.5W, and Oppo’s well-known VOOC standard went up to 20W.
  • Technically, the standard could go up to as much as 100W but you would be hard pressed to find manufacturers willing to go that high, with pictures of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 firmly placed in their minds.
  • Qualcomm’s QC 4.0 will is said to offer charging at either 5V (4.7A to 5.6A) or 9V (at 3A). Higher voltages (like 12V or 20V) would be an easy way to up the juice, but making a lithium ion battery accept charging at high voltage will produce a lot of heat – and heat, as you know, is bad.
  • For that, QC 4.0 will have something called Intelligent Negotiation of Optimum Voltage (INOV), which will smartly deliver the best voltage for your battery.

Open GApps app now available on Google Play Store

  • Now all of us might familiar with GApps if you frequently use custom ROMs on your Android device.
  • Custom ROMs these days usually give you a choice if you want to use Google’s bundled services, so most of them don’t come with Google apps embedded.
  • If you choose to go with Google’s services, you can install GApps, of which the Open GApps variants and bundles are one of the most popular.
  • Usually, when you want to download a variant of Open GApps, the user goes on to the official download site, selects the architecture of his device (ARM, ARM64, x86, x86_64), selects the Android version, and then picks an Open GApps bundle of his liking.
  • After downloading, the user will need to flash the Zip file through the recovery.
  • The new Open GApps app aims to simplify this process for users.

  • The app will have a wizard which detects – either from past device installations or current usage – and recommends which architecture, Android version, and bundle is best for you.
  • This works well with beginners while still giving power users options to choose from. So well done on these, Open GApps.
  • There are some caveats – the developer is new to app development and the app currently has some interface bugs, especially in Nougat.
  • This happens when you run the app in windowed (resized) mode or when you rotate the app to landscape orientation.
  • So best to keep it in normal portrait mode right now. For more info on the app, check out the source link below. Check out the app now available via theGoogle Play Store.

WhatsApp brings Two-Step verification

  • The new two-step verification is optional but your WhatsApp account is probably the one you want to secure first.
  • The company assures that once two-step verification enabled, any attempt to verify phone number on WhatsApp will require the six-digit passcode that is created by the user.
  • Currently, the two-step verification feature is available only for beta users, we can expect it to be rolled out to all users in coming weeks.
  • On Android, beta app users running version 2.16.341 or above will be able to enable the two-step verification. Windows 10 Mobile beta user, running version 2.16.280 of WhatsApp can enable the security feature.
  • To set up two-step verification for WhatsApp, you need to take the following steps:
  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Go to Account
  4. Look for Two-step verification
  5. Tap on Enable
  6. On the next screen, enter six-digit passcode.
  7. Next, re-enter six-digit passcode.
  8. Optionally, add your email address on the next screen.
  • In the last step - optional, as mentioned - WhatsApp asks for an email address to link with your account.
  • This email address will let WhatsApp to send a link via email to disable two-step verification in case user forgets the six-digit passcode.
  • Remember that in case you user forget the six-digit passcode, WhatsApp won't permit re-verifying the account within seven days of last using WhatsApp.
  • "After these seven days, your number will be permitted to re-verify on WhatsApp without your passcode, but you will lose all pending messages upon re-verifying - they will be deleted. If your number is re-verified on WhatsApp after 30 days of last using WhatsApp, and without your passcode, your account will be deleted and a new one will be created upon successfully re-verifying," the WhatsApp team.

SuperSU is Updated to Version 2.78 SR3

SuperSU is Updated to Version 2.78 SR3, Fixes Pixel Related Issue and More:

  • A little over a week ago Chainfire announced he was able to gain root access to the Pixel phones, and that it would be packaged up and released in a few days.
  • Then we saw the first official root method released for both the Pixel and Pixel XL. Thousands of us were instantly able to gain root access to our Pixel phones thanks to the work he put into the project.
  • Many thought he would take a break and relax for a little bit, but yesterday Chainfire released a bugfix update for SuperSU.
  • In a Google+ post published right after lunch time, Chainfire released version 2.78 SR3 of SuperSU. He tells us that most of the changes in this update are related to the A/B partition layout of the Pixel phones, but that it included some additional fixes as well.
  • The first change we’re told about is a System bind, and how SuperSU has now replaced the /system to /system_root/system symlink with a bind mount for devices that have the A/B partition layout (like we see in the Pixel and Pixel XL).
  • This change fixes the absolute paths to something that Android actually expects and as a result it has fixed the System UI crash issue when the battery dropped to 15%.
  • Chainfire says this will also fix some root apps that manipulate the /system partition as well.
  • The next fix in this update was getting SuperSU’s Full Unroot feature to work on devices that used the A/B partition layout.
  • This bug fix update also allows systemless root to survive when the Factory Reset Protection feature is enabled.
  • However, we are told that updates to SuperSU that were installed from the Play Store will be lost. These were the three biggest changes/fixes that are included in the latest update to SuperSU, but Chainfire also gives us a full changelog of the minor fixes too.
  1. Fix ‘Full Unroot’ on slot-based systems
  2. sukernel: replace system symlink with bind mount
  3. sukernel: add missing slot check for system_root import
  4. sukernel: fix ramdisk backup segmentation fault
  5. supolicy: adjust priv_app policy to be able to call su
  6. launch_daemonsu: adjust su.img size detection
  7. ZIP: improve loop device setup
  8. ZIP: add factory reset protection (FRP variable, default if slots used)
