Following are some notable features of Android Device Manager that can be used to track a lost Smartphone:
  • Locate: As soon as you login to Android device manager. You will be able to see location of your phone on Google maps. If your phone is offline, then you will see the time and date when it was last online. It will only work if you have enabled location services on your phone.

It will make your Smartphone ring at its highest volume for some minutes, even if its on silent mode. Once you locate it. You can press the power button and it will stop ringing.
  • Lock:  If you have left your phone somewhere and you have hope that if someone sees it. That person might try to contact you to return the phone. You can use this option to lock your phone and display a message along with some other number you wish to display on your phone screen which can be contacted to return the lost phone.

Will Samsung Galaxy A5, A7, A9, Galaxy J5, Galaxy C5, C7 get Android 7.0 Nougat update?

  • Samsung not only took longer than expected to roll out Android Marshmallow update to its flagship devices, but also missed out some of its popular mid-range handsets.
  • The company is yet to seed the 2015 firmware to some of its devices, and this has cast doubt on whether Google's new operating system Android 7.0 Nougat update will come to handsets like Galaxy A5, Galaxy A7, Galaxy A9, Galaxy J5, Galaxy C5, Galaxy C7 and others.
  • Android 7.0 Nougat has already been released to Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and Android One.
  • However, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are yet to start rolling out the OS to their devices.
  • The South Korean technology giant is yet to announce the list of devices that will get Android 7.0 Nougat update, but several reports have claimed that the firmware will come to Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 edge+, S6 Active, S6 Ironman edition, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S7 Active, S7 Batman edition, and S7 Olympic edition.
  • Now, the question is whether the company will seed the firmware to some of its popular handsets like Galaxy A5 (2016), Galaxy A7 (2015), Galaxy A7 (2016), Galaxy A8, Galaxy A9, Galaxy A9 Pro, Galaxy J5 (2016), Galaxy Tab S2, Galaxy On7, Galaxy C5, and Galaxy C7. Samsung hasn't uttered a word if these devices will get the firmware, but they are very likely to get it.
  • However, it may take time for these devices to get the Android 7.0 Nougat update, and it can run into the second half of 2017.
  • Android 7.0 Nougat has features like multi-window, direct reply notifications, Extra power efficiency, Google Assistant, VR interface, clear all, data saver, improved file browser, improved Java 8 language support, instant apps, app switch, seamless updates, screen zoom, bundled notifications, and new emojis.

HTC Bolt to be launched as ‘HTC 10 evo’

  • HTC’s anticipated mid-range smartphone, called the HTC Bolt, will now launch under a different moniker globally. The company has been long rumored to be working on a new smartphone and earlier this month, images of the purported smartphone were leaked online.
  • Now the latest information from reliable leakster Evan Blass indicates that the new smartphone will instead be sold as HTC 10 evo when it is released in late October.
  • The HTC 10 evo is said to have a bigger display as compared to the original HTC 10.
  • The HTC 10 features a 5.2-inch Quad HD display while the HTC 10 evo is likely to come with a 5.5-inch display, but with lower 1080p resolution.
  • According to speculations, the newest smartphone will run the older Snapdragon 810 chipset coupled with 3GB of RAM. If true, selection of Snapdragon 810 processor is bit surprising considering that the dated chipset was heavily criticized for overheating.
  • Moreover, we already have a lot of smartphones like the LeEco Le Max 2 and Moto Z running Qualcomm’s better and improved 820 processor. The smartphone will come with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.
  • After Motorola, LeEco and Apple, HTC is the next smartphone maker to do away with the 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • With the HTC 10 evo, the company is expected to introduce a headphone jack-free full-metal body smartphone that will draw inspiration from the HTC 10 in terms of design, and feature antenna lines like its predecessor.
  • One interesting element that will feature in the smartphone without a headphone jack is perhaps the HTC BoomSound audio-enhancing tech which will only be available through headphones.
  • As the smartphone does not feature the regular headphone jack, it is likely that HTC will offer either LeEco’s propriety Type-C based CDLA headphones or bundle a Type-C to 3.5mm connector to allow users to insert regular headphones.
  • The HTC 10 evo will come with an 18-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera for selfies. It seems HTC is not the latest trends with a dual-camera setup just yet, though it was among the first ones to launch dual cameras on smartphones.
  • The HTC 10 evo is expected to offer 64GB of onboard storage that will be further expandable.
  • Based on the leaked images, it seems the smartphone will not come with a hybrid slot for memory card or SIM but offer separate slots that will allow users to use a second SIM as well as insert a microSD card to boost storage simultaneously.
  • The smartphone features an oval home button, which is likely to come embedded with a fingerprint sensor.
  • Based on the leaked images of the purported smartphone, all that can be said is it will carry further the standard design of the HTC smartphones but bring in subtle improvements and new features.
  • Given the speculated features, the HTC 10 evo is unlikely to turn heads because most of the features are available in a lot of competing devices.

Google Messenger 2.0 New icon and design changes

Google Messenger 2.0 brings new icon and design changes:

  • Google Messenger has been updated to version 2.0, bringing some design changes to match the new Android Nougat.
  • The first difference you will notice is the icon – it is now rounded, just like the ones of other apps from Android 7.1. Additionally, the icon now displays a badge with the unread message count in the launcher without the need to install third-party plugins.
  • The notification tray icon has also been tweaked to match launcher one. Inside the app, the colour scheme of the conversation list screen has changed to a slightly darker blue, like the one from Google’s new dialer.
  • The contact pictures are also slightly smaller, allowing more text to be shown. Conversations have also been tweaked, with rounded message bubbles, a slightly different bottom bar and, once again, smaller contact pictures.
  • Additionally, clicking on a message will show whether it was an SMS or an MMS.
  • The bar at the top is slightly different and replacing the Frequent and All contacts tabs is a single screen with 8 top contacts and an alphabetical list of all contacts below it.
  • The new version of Google Messenger can be downloaded via APK Mirror. Use the button below to download the app and install it manually.

Intro & How to activate "WhatsApp video calling" for smartphones

WhatsApp introduces video calling for smartphones; here’s how to get the feature:

  • WhatsApp’s much awaited video-calling feature finally appears close to launch, but there is a catch. According to some reports, the video-calling feature is up for grabs in the beta version of the messaging app, but only for Android users.
  • However, WhatsApp still has not started to advertise the feature, even though there have been many reports that people have started testing this Android app’s new beta version on their smartphones.
  • If the users are on the new beta version of the app on Android, then they will now be able to see a ‘Video Call’ and ‘Voice Call’ choices when they tap the top dialer button.
  • A new dialog giving the option between a standard voice call and a video call will appear.
  • The feature reportedly lags a bit since it is still in its beta version. WhatsApp has an official beta testing program available on Google Play. In order to own this feature, users will have to get WhatsApp’s latest beta version.
  • Users will have to sign up for it by clicking on the ‘Become a Tester’ button.
  • One can also download the beta version of the messaging app from other websites like APK Mirror, which offer apps signed by Google. But one must make sure that the downloaded version is at least 2.16.318.
  • Earlier in October, there were reports of the video calling feature being seen in some of the Windows apps. Now with the app being seen in Android’s beta apps, it is clear that WhatsApp will soon introduce it in stable versions of Android and in Apple’s iOS as well.
  • Video calling is a highly anticipated service on messaging apps. Facebook as always been a revolutionary when it comes to virtual communication, from texts to voice.
  • There are indeed many other messaging apps which offer the video calling service, but WhatsApp’s incorporation will be interesting as it has more than a billion users.
  • In fact, it is surprising that with its resources and technical knowledge, it could only come up with the feature so late.

Galaxy S8 "the first smartphone with optical fingerprint recognition"

Galaxy S8 will be the first smartphone with optical fingerprint recognition:

  • Samsung is expected to introduce some major hardware changes with the Galaxy S8, a recent report suggested that the next flagship is going to be truly “full-screen” as the display will be curved on the top and bottom edges as well.
  • Now hearing whispers out of China that the Galaxy S8 is going to be the world’s first smartphone to feature optical fingerprint recognition technology.
  • It will eliminate the fingerprint scanner beneath the home button.
  • We’ve previously heard rumors that Samsung is going to integrate the Galaxy S8′s fingerprint scanner inside the display itself.
  • An optical fingerprint scanner works when the finger is placed on a glass plate, or in a smartphone’s case, on the glass display.
  • We’ve not seen this implementation in any other smartphones yet so the Galaxy S8 is certainly going to be the first smartphone to feature optical fingerprint recognition, which is both more accurate and faster than ultrasonic fingerprint recognition.
  • It’s said that presently the yield of optical fingerprint recognition components for the Galaxy S8 is not high but since the handset is more than three months away, there’s ample time for yield issues to be addressed before the Galaxy S8 is released early next year.

And, with today’s update from Google, the voice assistant’s response will sound more natural than ever.
Check a long list of OK, Google commands to help you get more done with just your voice.
There are two ways to say a command.
  • Newer Android devices, just say “OK Google,” followed by a question or task. For example, if I wanted to know the weather, I could say “OK Google, what’s the weather like today?” and a few seconds later Google Now would provide the forecast.
  • Tap on the microphone button in the Google search bar, and skip the “OK, Google” portion of the conversation. If the search bar isn’t on a home screen, swipe right from the primary home screen to see Google Now.

If “OK, Google” isn’t working for you, make sure that feature is enabled. Head to the Google Now app, go to Menu > Settings > Voice > “OK Google” detection.

Pixel Launcher now available on Play Store

  • After long time, Pixel Launcher arrived on Play Store and it still only compatible with the Pixel phones. As Google promised some exclusive features for its Pixel brand.
  • Google now has two launcher apps in the Play Store, but you can't install the new one.
  • The Pixel Launcher is one of the selling points of the Pixel phones, and remains technically exclusive to them.
  • Having the Pixel Launcher in the Play Store means Google can push updates to the launcher very easily.
  • If you want to sideload the launcher, the versions published on the store will be mirrored quickly.
  • It would be very easy for Google to flip a switch and make the Pixel Launcher available for more phones.
  • There do not appear to be any change in the features of this version. Everything listed in the changelog is a feature Google already demoed.
  • You can sideload the Pixel Launcher installing apk of that launcher.

Android 7.1.1 Nougat Developer Preview for Nexus 6P, 5X & Pixel C

  • Google announced earlier this month that the Android 7.1 Nougat developer preview will be released for select devices by the end of this month. The search giant has now delivered on its promise and made the developer preview available for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C.
  • In order to get the developer preview, you can sign up for the company’s Android Beta Program, which was announced earlier this year, and receive the update over-the-air. You can also choose to download the factory image for the preview from the Android website and flash it to your compatible device.
Android 7.1.1 introduces several new features which we listed below:
  • App Shortcuts API– up to 5 intents can be launched within a menu accessed by long-pressing on an app’s icon from the launcher
  • Image Keyboard Support– easily share images from your IME to any text input in your favourite app
  • Enhanced Live Wallpaper Metadata– wallpaper pickers can now display more detailed information while previewing the live wallpaper
  • Round Icon Resources – developers can now easily style their app icon to be rounded to fit in with the new Pixel Launcher
  • Storage Manager Intent– if running low on storage, apps can now directly guide user to the storage manager so they can quickly free up space
  • Improved VR Thread scheduling– developers can dedicate a single thread solely to handling the VR process, hopefully reducing latency
  • The Android API level is also finally being bumped up to version 25 with this release, so if your device is running this latest preview you can start taking advantage of apps that are targeting API level 25, which includes Google Camera v4.2.
  • Google has also opened up the ability for third-parties to start publishing apps in the Play Store under this new API level, so if you’re a developer looking to build an app aimed at Pixel owners you can get started immediately with the updated development tools.
  • Google tends to not publish a fully comprehensive change-log for the Developer Preview, so there’s always some goodies for users to discover once they’ve flashed the update.
  • Here is a list of some new features that users are reporting on our forums. Keep in mind, though, that these features can be removed in a future update without notice:
  • Reboot option in power menu
  • Notification panel has space for an additional tile, and provides easier access to directly launch the settings app
  • Support tab in settings
  • New “Moves” menu in settings, which now holds all of the gesture-based options including Ambient Display, Double-Tap Power to launcher Camera, and Double Twist to switch between Cameras while in Google Camera
  • sRGB picture color mode in Developer Settings
  • As expected, the Pixel “exclusive” features such as Google Assistant and fingerprint gestures are not available in this Developer Preview.
There are three ways to get the update to Android 7.1 developer preview at this time. The first is through the Android Beta Program, which will allow Google to send the update to you over-the-air. If you don’t want to go that route, you can choose between flashing factory images or OTA .zip files found below.
